The Wolf Restoration Program and Some of It Impacts

broken image

The wolf restoration program entails re-establishment of the gray wolves. Usually, the restoration of wolves is done in that native areas where the wolves have gone to extinction or have ceased to exist. There are several factors that makes the consideration of reintroduction possible. First, the reintroduction can only be completed where there are large tracts of wilderness which are suitable for the gray wolves. The restoration is also done where there are certain species, usually prey, and in abundance. Abundance of prey is what will support the population of the wolves. The wolf reintroduction programs have been established in many places. This includes but not limited to United States, Colorado.

The restoration of wolves has had a positive impact to the biodiversity. In most of the places, the reintroduction of the wolves has led to the increase in vegetation growth. The increased growth is on certain types of plants. A good example of such plants is the aspen and the willow trees. Reintroduction of wolves has also impacted the behaviors of some animals. The Elk, is a good example of such which is the main prey to the wolves. Out of fear of being attacked by the wolves, the Elk will graze deeper into the bushes and thickets. Another impact on the behavior of animals such as the Elk is avoidance of open places. Before the reintroduction of wolves, animals would graze together openly in valleys and meadows. Where the only predators were animals such as the lions. You can click here for more details.

Apart from the impact on vegetation and behavior of some animals, restoration of the wolves has also contributed to the recovery of other animals which had gone to close extinction in some places. A good example of such is the beaver and the red fox. The probable reason behind this may be the fact that wolves keep control of the coyote populate. As aforementioned, the wolf’s reintroduction has led to restoration of vegetation in some places. The restored vegetation impacts the environment in a positive way. This then restores a functioning ecosystem in the wilderness where the wolves have been restored. Although the restoration of the ecosystem may take a long time, the resulting habitat for the wildlife will be increased. More to that, there will be a buffering of the natural areas. Lastly, water, carbon and flow of other nutrients in the ecosystem which are crucial will also increase as the time goes by. Discover more here : https://www.dictionary.com/browse/wolf.
